Catering courses at The Big Fig (our ethical catering company) offer unique opportunities for people who are not in work to develop their skills, aspirations and take their next steps while learning in our working kitchen.
We offer two courses to choose from to support you at the different stages of your journey.

Catering for you

With a focus on food and cooking, Catering for You is a course for people who are not in work to build confidence, motivation, interpersonal and work skills and plan the next steps. Join us on this 4 week part-time course which will give you the opportunity to:

  • Explore your goals and aspirations

  • Build your confidence

  • Develop your interpersonal and work skills

  • Learn to cook in a professional kitchen

  • Work as a team on food challenges

  • Get more active in your community

  • Learn about healthy eating to improve your wellbeing and health

  • Plan your next steps including an opportunity to progress onto Catering Experience

The programme is fully funded and you can even apply for travel, childcare and carer costs to enable you to fully participate.

Catering for you is delivered by The Platform in partnership with Aspire Sussex as part of the Local Learning Perspectives Project. The project has received funding under the Building Better Opportunities Programme which is jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund.

Catering experience

Join us and discover how you can develop your skills and start your journey to becoming a professional chef. The six week Catering Experience which will give you the opportunity to:

  • Learn professional catering skills in a working kitchen

  • Improve your work skills

  • Plan menus

  • Develop your knife skills

  • Work in a brigade as a team

  • Gain catering and employability qualifications

  • Carry out a 2-week work training placement in France, Holland or Italy as a group

  • Prepare and deliver a pop-up catering evening in a local restaurant

For people who are unemployed, 19 or over, on employment benefits, have a valid passport and want to start a career in catering.

WHERE

Brighton with 2 weeks in either France, Holland or Italy

Fully funded including your travel, food and accommodation while you are abroad
